NEPRA hikes power tariff by 50 paisas per unit

Islamabad: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) on Saturday made another hike in the power tariff by 50 paisas per unit, sending yet another blow to the consumers who are already undergoing torments of continuous surge in oil and power prices.

The national power regulatory authority said in its decision that the increase in the power tariff was made as part of the quarterly adjustment. The new electricity rate will put an additional burden of Rs12 billion on the consumers. The new raise will not impact the lifeline consumers and will be effective for three months from September 1 and Nov 1, 2022. Industrial consumers, however, already availing a relief package will be exempted from this fresh increase.

On July 28, NEPRA increased power tariff for K-Electric consumers by Rs11.37 per unit. The approval was given in terms of fuel adjustment charges for June 2022. The increase will not be applicable for life-line consumers. The spokesman for the K-Electric said that the power tariff was raise in view of hike in prices of furnace oil in international markets by 42 percent from March to June 2022.
