Pakistan has called upon the United Nations Security Council to take urgent action to address the escalating conflict and humanitarian crisis in Yemen, including a ceasefire, the release of detained UN staff, and the resumption of peace talks. Addressing the Security Council briefing on Yemen on 15 September 2025, Pakistan’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Aamir Khan, emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating that the ongoing violence and violations of international law posed a threat to regional stability.

Ambassador Khan expressed serious concerns over the ongoing clashes between the Houthis and Israel, highlighting their detrimental impact on Yemen and the surrounding region. He stressed the importance of restraint and the protection of civilians, condemning attacks on civilian populations and infrastructure.

He strongly criticized the ongoing arbitrary detentions by the Houthis, including 21 UN staff members, and interference with WFP and UNICEF facilities. He termed these actions as grave violations of international law and demanded the immediate and unconditional release of all detained UN, NGO, and diplomatic personnel.

The Ambassador also drew attention to Yemen’s deteriorating humanitarian situation, where two-thirds of the population requires assistance. He appealed to donors and organizations to increase aid, warning that the lack of timely assistance could lead to massive loss of life.

Ambassador Khan reiterated support for the December 2023 Roadmap for sustainable peace, emphasizing dialogue as key. He urged all parties to engage in meaningful political efforts toward an inclusive peace process and commended the Special Envoy’s efforts to facilitate talks.

He reminded the Security Council of its responsibility to speak unequivocally to promote the peace process and end the suffering of the Yemeni people. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to working with the Security Council to find a peaceful solution, emphasizing that the world’s response to Yemen’s plight would determine its future. He declared that urgent and decisive intervention for peace and stability is imperative.
