Sindh Government Launches Province-Wide Anti-Drug Operation

Sindh government spokesperson Sukhdev Hemnani has announced the launch of a province-wide anti-drug operation targeting both drug use and smuggling. Initiated on the directives of President Asif Ali Zardari, the campaign prioritizes youth protection and public safety, reflecting a commitment made at the start of his presidency.

The administration is taking strict measures to control drug use among youth. The Sindh Control of Narcotic Substances Act 2024 proposes harsh penalties, including 7 to 14 years imprisonment for use, 7 years for cultivation, and property confiscation for smuggling.

A special anti-drug task force will be formed under the new law, and the provincial cabinet has approved the establishment of three special courts for the speedy trial of drug cases.

Currently, the Sindh government is collaborating with the Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) to combat drug use. Expanding rehabilitation centers is also a key objective.

To enhance inter-agency cooperation, a fusion center, similar to the 2024 Counter Terrorism Fusion Center, will be established to enable intelligence sharing and effectively coordinated efforts between federal and provincial agencies to curb smuggling.

Sindh Police have intensified anti-drug operations across the province. Karachi police and Rangers recently raided over 100 residences in Sharafi Goth, Malir. Simultaneously, the Home Department is strengthening surveillance in border areas. A dedicated helpline (021-111-374-634) has been established for public reporting.

The Sindh government is committed to making the province drug-free and will focus on improvements in prevention, treatment, enforcement, and legislation to achieve this goal.
