Pakistan Welcomes Supplemental Award Announced by Court of Arbitration

Pakistan today welcomed a move by an international arbitration court which reaffirmed the validity of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) following India’s controversial decision to suspend its participation.

According to Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a supplemental award, the court, adjudicating the Kishenganga and Ratle hydroelectric project disagreement between the two nations, declared its jurisdiction remains active. It emphasized its commitment to ensuring the proceedings move forward efficiently and equitably.

The tribunal’s declaration comes after India’s unilateral move to put the IWT on hold, a decision Pakistan viewed as unlawful. Pakistan has expressed its approval of the supplemental award, stating it supports their stance that the treaty remains in effect. The nation maintains that India lacks the authority to unilaterally alter the agreement.

The ruling strengthens Pakistan’s argument against India’s actions. The Islamic Republic has called on its neighbor to reinstate its commitment to the IWT and uphold its treaty responsibilities.
