Pakistan Explores Khorgos Model For Border Trade Boost

Pakistan’s Ambassador to China, Khalil Hashmi, visited the Khorgos Free Trade Zone in Xinjiang to explore its potential application for enhancing trade and connectivity at the Khunjerab dry port between Pakistan and China. The zone, encompassing a bustling dry port, border gate, and cooperation center, facilitates seamless movement of commodities and individuals between China and Kazakhstan.

Hashmi engaged with local officials, discussing the evolution of Khorgos into a cutting-edge crossing point. They explored collaborative avenues to leverage Khorgos”s achievements for Pakistan”s border infrastructure development.

During his tour, the ambassador was informed about the port”s technologically advanced customs and immigration processes, which enable rapid cargo clearance. The two-way trade volume has reportedly surged by 46% in 2025. Hashmi also examined the thriving duty-free border market, where citizens of various nations can shop without import duties. Pakistani and Chinese authorities plan to maintain communication to potentially replicate this model at Pakistan”s borders.

This diplomatic endeavor follows recent bilateral initiatives to modernize border infrastructure, including the year-round operation of the Khunjerab Pass launched in December 2024. Ambassador Hashmi”s previous visit to the Khunjerab Port in June last year underscores the ongoing efforts. Further enhancements, such as integrated border management and a dedicated channel for agricultural products, are under consideration.
