Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar reaffirmed Pakistan’s longstanding commitment to United Nations peacekeeping on the occasion of the International Day of UN Peacekeepers, honouring the service and sacrifices of peacekeepers around the globe, including 181 Pakistanis who laid down their lives in the line of duty.
In a message marking the day, the Deputy Prime Minister paid tribute to the dedication and courage of UN peacekeepers working in conflict zones worldwide to uphold international peace and security.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs here on Thursday, Mr. Dar emphasized that Pakistan remains a leading contributor to UN peacekeeping efforts, having deployed over 235,000 personnel, both men and women, to various missions over the decades.
Highlighting Pakistan’s enduring support to the UN, the Deputy Prime Minister noted the country’s role as host to one of the oldest UN peacekeeping missions-the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP). He underscored the continued relevance of UNMOGIP in the context of regional developments and reiterated the need for a just resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in line with UN Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.
‘UN peacekeeping remains one of the most reliable and costeffective tools for maintaining international peace and security, especially in a world facing increasingly complex threats,’ Mr. Dar stated.
He also recalled the successful cohosting of the Third United Nations Peacekeeping Ministerial Preparatory Meeting with the Republic of Korea on 15-16 April 2025 in Islamabad. The event, held under the theme *’Towards a Safer and More Effective Peacekeeping: Use of Technology and Integrated Approach’*, contributed to shaping new strategies for making peacekeeping more adaptive and resilient.
Calling for renewed political will, Mr. Dar urged the international community to embrace technological innovation and strengthen regional cooperation to meet contemporary peacekeeping challenges.
The Deputy Prime Minister concluded by reaffirming that Pakistan will continue to support UN peacekeeping as a vital instrument for achieving a peaceful, stable, and prosperous world.
