Pakistan has secured a position on the Executive Council of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) for the 2026-2028 term, following an election held this week in The Hague.

According to a report today, the vote took place during the 30th Session of the Conference of States Parties, the principal meeting of the Chemical Weapons Convention”s (CWC) 193 member states. The 41-member Executive Council serves as the primary policy-making body of the OPCW. Its responsibilities include overseeing the effective implementation of and compliance with the Chemical Weapons Convention.

In addition to its oversight duties, the council also promotes the scientific and economic development of member nations in the peaceful applications of chemistry. The CWC is regarded as a significant disarmament treaty, credited with eliminating an entire category of weapons of mass destruction.

Pakistan has been a continuous member of the Executive Council since ratifying the CWC in 1997. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the country actively participates in the organisation”s work and permits routine OPCW inspections of its relevant facilities.
