Former senator Mushtaq Ahmad has been set free from Israeli detention after being captured from a Gaza-bound humanitarian aid convoy, a development confirmed Tuesday by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar. The former lawmaker was among approximately 200 peace activists taken into custody when Israeli forces intercepted the international relief mission in the Mediterranean Sea.

In a statement posted on the social media platform X, Foreign Minister Dar announced the successful release and shared a photograph of the former senator. ‘I am pleased to confirm that former Senator Mushtaq Ahmad has been released and is now safe at the Pakistan Embassy in Oman. He is in good health and high spirits,’ Dar wrote.

The foreign minister further elaborated that the embassy in Oman is now arranging for Mr. Ahmad’s repatriation to Pakistan based on his preferences. He extended his appreciation for the diplomatic support received, stating, ‘I am grateful to all our friendly countries that actively engaged and assisted Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in securing his release.’

Mr. Ahmad’s detention occurred after the Israeli Navy surrounded the ‘Global Sumud Flotilla’ about 70 nautical miles from the coast of Gaza. The naval forces seized 13 vessels carrying aid, including the boats ‘Alma’ and ‘Cyrus’, which were boarded by Israeli commandos who arrested everyone onboard, including renowned climate activist Greta Thunberg.

Following the seizure, Pakistan’s Foreign Office initiated intensive diplomatic efforts for Mr. Ahmad’s safe return. The ministry had been operating continuously through its embassy in Jordan and previously acknowledged the crucial role played by the Jordanian government, expressing gratitude for its ‘remarkable cooperation and generous assistance’ in the matter.
