Pakistan and Malaysia issued a powerful joint condemnation of the “ongoing genocide in Gaza” and called for an immediate, permanent ceasefire, highlighting a unified stance on a pressing global crisis during Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s official visit. The two nations also reaffirmed their commitment to significantly enhance their strategic partnership across multiple sectors.
The joint statement, released by the Foreign Office on Tuesday, concluded a three-day official tour by Prime Minister Sharif, his first to the Southeast Asian nation since assuming office in March 2024. The visit, at the invitation of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, aimed to build upon a diplomatic relationship that began in 1957 and was elevated to a Strategic Partnership in 2019.
During bilateral talks held on October 6 in a warm and cordial atmosphere, the two premiers reviewed existing collaborations and exchanged views on regional and international developments of mutual concern.
A key focus of the discussions was bolstering economic ties. Both sides pledged to fully utilize the Malaysia-Pakistan Closer Economic Partnership Agreement (MPCEPA). Malaysia announced its intention to increase palm oil exports to Pakistan to meet rising demand, with both nations committing to a stable and environmentally responsible supply chain.
Further economic collaboration will center on the halal industry, with agreements on mutual certification recognition and sharing expertise in food manufacturing. The countries will also explore joint research and innovation in sustainable agriculture.
The leaders expressed satisfaction with their robust defence relationship, governed by the Joint Committee on Defence Cooperation (JCDC) since 1997. They resolved to augment collaboration in defence technology, science, and industry, including the transfer of knowledge.
This security partnership will also extend to modern threats, with commitments to enhance joint efforts in cybersecurity, counterterrorism, and combating transnational organized crime through improved information sharing.
The premiers emphasized expanding institutional partnerships in education and technical training. They also consented to improve air connectivity to foster greater people-to-people exchanges, tourism, and business linkages.
Addressing global energy challenges, Pakistan and Malaysia will explore joint ventures in renewable energy and climate resilience. In public health, cooperation will expand to pharmaceuticals and medical devices, while Malaysia actively welcomed Pakistani tourists for its upcoming “Visit Malaysia 2026” and “Malaysia Year of Medical Tourism 2026” campaigns.
On the international stage, the leaders reiterated their unwavering support for the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and demanded the lifting of the Gaza blockade to allow unhindered humanitarian aid. They also addressed the situation in Afghanistan, stressing the need for inclusive governance and continued humanitarian assistance.
Both prime ministers denounced Islamophobia, xenophobia, and all forms of religious intolerance, welcoming the United Nations’ appointment of a Special Envoy to combat the issue.
Prime Minister Sharif affirmed Pakistan’s strong support for Malaysia’s upcoming ASEAN Chairmanship, praising its leadership in promoting regional peace. The visit concluded with the Pakistani premier expressing deep gratitude for the warm hospitality and reaffirming his nation’s dedication to advancing the bilateral strategic relationship.
