National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq lauded Pakistan’s commitment to democracy, emphasizing its vital role in the nation’s progress on the International Day of Democracy. Sadiq celebrated the country’s enduring democratic values, consistent parliamentary function, and public engagement. In a formal declaration, he described democracy as the embodiment of public empowerment and the pathway to national prosperity. He acknowledged the contributions of political figures, activists, and journalists who championed democratic principles.

The NA Speaker explained that Pakistan’s foundation rests on a democratic struggle, with its constitution guaranteeing fundamental rights such as equality, religious freedom, free speech, and political involvement. He noted that Islamic teachings align with democratic governance through principles of consultation and public engagement. Sadiq affirmed Parliament’s role as the ultimate expression of the people’s will, translating public aspirations into tangible outcomes through legislation and oversight. He stressed that parliamentary sovereignty, adherence to the constitution, inter-institutional harmony, and public welfare are cornerstones of democratic stability.

Recalling Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s August 11th address, Sadiq reiterated every citizen’s right to religious freedom, emphasizing the state’s neutrality towards personal beliefs. He honored political leaders, including former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Begum Kulsoom Nawaz, and former Prime Ministers Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto, for their contributions to Pakistani democracy. He argued that the democratic system empowers citizens, ensures institutional accountability, and promotes collective wisdom for national advancement, urging political unity for the country’s benefit.

Sadiq underscored youth participation in democracy, highlighting National Assembly programs such as the Parliamentary Studies Program and the Young Parliamentarians Forum. He emphasized the importance of youth involvement for a thriving democracy. The NA Speaker also noted Parliament’s legislative achievements on women’s rights, financial accountability, and environmental sustainability. He highlighted cross-party collaboration through platforms like the Women’s Parliamentary Caucus and the Parliamentary Task Force on Sustainable Development Goals as embodiments of participatory democracy.

Deputy Speaker Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the sacrifices of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto for democracy.
