World Humanitarian Day is observed every year on August 19. Humanitarian workers are the people who keep people alive, often at great personal risk. But more and more helpers are themselves being targeted.

In 2024, more than 380 aid workers were killed, some during their duty, some in their homes. Hundreds of others were injured, kidnapped or taken prisoner, and there are fears that 2025 could prove even more dangerous.

Despite international laws designed to protect aid workers, these laws are often ignored. Perpetrators often escape justice, which promotes a culture of impunity. This disregard for human life and international agreements needs attention and change.

This failing structure affects not only aid workers, but also the vulnerable communities they assist. Global needs are increasing while funding is decreasing. Attacks on aid workers are reaching unprecedented levels, bringing the humanitarian aid system to the brink.
