UN coordinator calls on chief secretary Sindh

KARACHI: The United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Pakistan Julien Harneis on Tuesday called upon Chief Secretary Sindh Suhail Ahmed Rajput at his office. The different issues being faced by flood affectees, the process of rehabilitation and relief activities were discussed during the meeting.

The meeting was attended by Chairman Planning and Development, Provincial Secretaries including Rehabilitation, Irrigation and Agriculture departments and others. The Deputy Commissioners of the province also took part in the meeting and they briefed about ongoing relief activities in detail. It was agreed upon in the meeting that all those organizations which are providing aid to the flood victims should be united in one place so that the aid could be reached to victims in a coordinated manner.

On this occasion, Chief Secretary, Sindh strictly directed all the concerned Deputy Commissioners that they should activate the District Disaster Management Units and should also notify the coordination committees in their respective districts.

These committees should be comprised on different departments officers, businessmen, civil society and agricultural experts as members. He further directed them that they should remain in close laison and enhance coordination with the UN partner agencies. The United Nations Resident and Coordinator Julien Harneis told that two operational bases have been set up in Hyderabad and Sukkur districts regarding flood response.

These two established operational bases will cover the adjoining district including Jamshoro, Sanghar, Dadu, Mirpurkhas, Khairpur, Qmber Shahdadkot, and Jacobabad. In the meeting, it was also agreed that the United Nations would help in conducting a post-disaster survey regarding the climatic changes and environment in Sindh.
