Pakistan is set to leverage Egypt’s extensive experience in managing the Suez Canal to overhaul its maritime sector, as both nations agreed on Wednesday to significantly deepen cooperation in a strategic move aimed at expanding regional trade and enhancing connectivity across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.
The understanding was reached during high-level discussions between Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, and the Egyptian Ambassador to Pakistan, Dr. Ihab Mohamed Abdelhamid Hassan. The meeting focused on forging a robust partnership to unlock the potential of their blue economies.
Both officials underscored a shared commitment to strengthening economic and maritime ties. The dialogue explored collaborative opportunities in critical areas such as port development, shipping, and logistics, with an emphasis on creating new industrial joint ventures.
Minister Chaudhry affirmed Pakistan’s determination to improve regional connectivity through an integrated network of sea, road, and rail links. “We are working hard to establish stronger links with Central Asian states and East African countries, and we can further enhance maritime connectivity with Egypt,” he stated.
In a significant diplomatic proposal, the minister outlined a plan to establish “Pakistan Houses” in Egypt, Africa, and Central Asia. These centers would serve as hubs to promote trade, investment, and business partnerships, with Pakistan welcoming similar initiatives from other nations to foster mutual economic growth.
Ambassador Hassan welcomed the Pakistani initiatives, offering to share his country’s considerable expertise in maritime management, particularly from operating the globally vital Suez Canal free zones. He expressed Egypt’s readiness to support the development of similar frameworks in Pakistan.
The envoy also praised the quality of Pakistani products, including spices, pharmaceuticals, leather goods, and rice, expressing optimism that bilateral trade would continue to grow. Both sides concluded that closer collaboration is essential for strengthening their economies and fostering greater regional integration.
