WAPDA has achieved another significant milestone in the construction of the Mohmand Dam, with the commencement of the main dam’s construction.
Prior to this, key tasks such as river diversion and excavation of the dam foundation were completed. The completion of the Mohmand Dam is scheduled for the end of 2027.
On the occasion of starting the main dam’s construction, the Federal Minister for Water Resources, Mian Muhammad Moin Wattoo, visited the project. The Chairman of WAPDA, Engineer Lieutenant General Sajjad Ghani (Retired), accompanied him. Project managers from the project team, contractors, and consultants were also present.
The Federal Minister inspected various sites of the project, including the diversion system, power intake tunnel, spillways, and powerhouse. He was briefed about the ongoing construction work at 14 different sites of the project.
Expressing satisfaction with the project’s progress, the Federal Minister stated that the government is fully aware of the increasing needs for water and affordable electricity.
The Mohmand Dam project is being constructed on the Swat River in the Mohmand District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. It is the world’s fifthlargest CFRD (ConcreteFaced Rockfill Dam), standing 213 meters tall. The project has a water storage capacity of 1.29 million acrefeet, which will provide water for agriculture to local land.
With a generation capacity of 800 megawatts, the dam will supply 2.86 billion units of environmentally friendly electricity annually to the national grid. The project will not only help in flood control but also provide 300 million gallons of drinking water daily to Peshawar.
