Religious Media Urged To Bolster Humanitarian Reporting

Religious publications and digital platforms are being encouraged to strengthen their contributions to humanitarian journalism, a vital tool for disseminating accurate information during crises. This call to action emerged from a two-day regional workshop held in Islamabad for editors of religious journals and digital content creators.

The training, jointly organized by the Institute of Policy Studies (IPS) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), focused on providing participants with the skills and knowledge necessary for effective reporting during armed conflicts and humanitarian emergencies.

Experts including Syed Nadeem Farhat, Dr. Ziaullah Rahmani, Dr. Yasir Riaz, Muhammad Waqar Bhatti, and Dr. Saqib Jawad led sessions on topics ranging from the impact of climate change and technology on human tragedies to the role of humanitarian organizations and international law. Practical training exercises, including scenario-based role-playing, provided hands-on experience in responsible reporting on humanitarian issues.

The first day centered on educating attendees about the fundamental aspects of humanitarian endeavors, while the second day delved into the guiding principles of humanitarian organizations – humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, volunteerism, universality, and unity. Speakers highlighted the importance of sensitivity and accurate reporting when covering human suffering and humanitarian crises, drawing upon their firsthand experiences.

In his closing remarks, IPS Chairman Khalid Rahman acknowledged the considerable efforts of faith-based humanitarian workers, stressing the importance of a thorough understanding of the global humanitarian framework for effective collaboration within existing aid systems. ICRC Head of Delegation Christoph Sutter reinforced the ICRC’s ongoing commitment to supporting the Pakistani government and its people during humanitarian crises by equipping relevant stakeholders.
