In an appeal for enhanced global partnership, Pakistan today urged the international community to adopt stronger and non-discriminatory measures to prevent the spread of weapons of mass destruction, highlighting the critical need for such actions in the current climate of heightened geopolitical tensions.
The call was articulated by Ambassador Usman Jadoon, Pakistan’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, during a Security Council briefing concerning the 1540 Committee.
Ambassador Jadoon underscored that efforts to curb WMD dissemination are more vital than ever amidst a complex international landscape fraught with conflicts and security challenges.
He cautioned, however, that non-proliferation initiatives must not obstruct international collaboration in the peaceful application of dual-use technologies. The Ambassador stressed that access to these advancements is crucial for the economic development of nations, particularly within the Global South.
Reaffirming the position on sovereign rights, the envoy stated that all countries possess an inalienable right to utilise nuclear energy and associated technologies for peaceful purposes, provided it is consistent with non-proliferation commitments and international legal obligations.
