Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi chaired a high-level meeting today to finalize the nationwide security plan for Muharram, focusing on a crackdown against online religious hatred.
The gathering, held at the Ministry of Interior, reviewed security arrangements for all provinces, including Azad Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Islamabad.
A key decision involved initiating legal action against individuals propagating religious animosity on social media. Recommendations will be sent to the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) to control hate content on electronic and online platforms. Authorities will strive to maintain peace during Muharram, with potential internet or mobile service disruptions decided in consultation with provinces based on security assessments.
Naqvi instructed officials to base decisions regarding communication restrictions on the ground situation, emphasizing collaborative decision-making. The federal government pledged full support to all regions for upholding law and order.
The minister stressed a zero-tolerance policy towards violence and disruption, promising strict enforcement of the Muharram code of conduct. Advanced technology will be utilized to monitor processions and assemblies.
Provincial police chiefs and home secretaries briefed Naqvi on their respective security strategies. Attendees included Minister of State for Interior Tallal Chaudhry, the Federal Secretary Interior, the Acting Chairman of the Capital Development Authority, the Commandant of the Frontier Constabulary, Islamabad”s Deputy Commissioner and Deputy Inspector General of Police, and senior representatives from the Interior Ministry and law enforcement bodies. Officials from all provinces, Azad Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan joined via video link.
