Pakistan and India exchanged lists of detainees held in each other’s jails on Tuesday, a move mandated by a 2008 consular agreement, with Islamabad pushing for the quick return of its citizens. The biannual exchange, occurring on January 1 and July 1, was conducted through diplomatic channels, the Foreign Office confirmed in a statement.

Pakistan provided a list of 246 Indian or presumed Indian inmates to the Indian High Commission in Islamabad. The roster includes 53 civilian detainees and 193 fishermen. Concurrently, India shared a list of 463 Pakistani or presumed Pakistani prisoners with the Pakistani High Commission in New Delhi, comprising 382 civilians and 81 fishermen.

Islamabad has pressed New Delhi to expedite the release and repatriation of Pakistani prisoners and fishermen who have served their sentences and whose citizenship has been verified. Furthermore, Pakistan seeks consular access to all individuals believed to be Pakistani nationals, particularly those with physical or mental disabilities, to quickly confirm their identities.

Pakistan also requested consular access for all Pakistani prisoners who have not yet received it, stressing the importance of ensuring their safety, security, and welfare while in Indian custody. Reiterating its commitment to addressing humanitarian matters promptly, Pakistan pledged continued efforts for the early return of all its citizens imprisoned in India.
