Pakistan expresses condolences over loss of lives in China earthquake

Pakistan on Tuesday expressed heartfelt condolences over the tragic loss of lives caused by the earthquake in China’s Xizang.

‘We extend our support to the people and government of China in their relief efforts’, the Foreign Office Spokesperson said in a statement issued here.

It said our thoughts remain with the injured and those still missing, and we also extend best wishes for the ongoing rescue operations.

According to media reports quoting Chinese authorities, a 6.8 magnitude earthquake rocked the northern foothills of the Himalayas near one of Tibet’s holiest cities on Tuesday, killing at least 95 people and shaking buildings in neighbouring Nepal, Bhutan and India.

The United States (US) Geological Service put the quake’s magnitude at 7.1. The media reports quoting the China Earthquake Networks Centre said, the quake hit at 9:05am (0105 GMT), with its epicentre located in Tingri, a rural county known as the northern gateway to the Everest region, at a depth of 10km (6.2 miles).
