Lahore at forefront of global environmental concern

LAHORE: Lahore, once again, finds itself at the forefront of a global environmental concern as it battles soaring levels of air pollution, according to a report on Tuesday. Despite international efforts to combat smog, the provincial government’s inability to address the root causes has led to alarming consequences for the city’s residents.

Recent data reveals a staggering Air Quality Index (AQI) in Lahore, with an average reading of 397 and a particularly distressing AQI of 444 in Amir Town. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) paints a grim picture, forecasting no relief in the form of rain for the next 24 hours, indicating a persistent smog threat looming over the provincial capital.

Health experts are sounding the alarm, advising residents to refrain from unnecessary travel and to wear face masks when venturing outdoors. Such precautions are deemed necessary as the AQI levels, especially in the range of 400-500, pose major health risks even to individuals without pre-existing conditions.

In response to the escalating crisis, the Lahore High Court issued a directive to the Punjab government, mandating the closure of all schools and colleges on Saturdays. The court further recommended a two-day remote work arrangement, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.

As Lahore grapples with the immediate implications of hazardous air quality, the international community is compelled to acknowledge the city’s struggle as a microcosm of a broader, pressing issue. The call for collaborative, long-term solutions to mitigate vehicular emissions, industrial pollutants, and agricultural practices contributing to smog has never been more urgent. In the face of a global environmental crisis, Lahore stands as a poignant reminder of the need for swift and comprehensive action.
