The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has approved a comprehensive sanitation plan for rural areas across the province. Initially covering 2061 villages and union councils, with later expansion to hilly areas, the project, approved in a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mahmood Khan, will employ four sanitation workers on daily wages in each union council, utilizing a transparent system for their services. These workers will collect waste from door to door and transfer it to designated locations managed by the Tehsil Municipal Administration (TMA). Each council will be equipped with a loader truck and necessary tools. The implementation will be overseen by Assistant Commissioners, Tehsil Municipal Officers, and Local Government Assistant Directors, involving elected representatives and community committees. A performance monitoring mechanism will be established to ensure effectiveness. Formal launch is expected on August 14, subject to ratification in the next provincial cabinet meeting. Chief Minister Khan termed the project a milestone, calling it the first of its kind in the province’s rural landscape. He expects the program to improve sanitation and generate thousands of job opportunities. The Chief Minister emphasized adherence to the set timeline and transparency in the recruitment process. A sustainable operational framework is also being developed for the program’s longevity.
