Pakistan is set to significantly expand Gwadar Port”s capacity with new shipping routes and a ferry service to Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs announced. The ambitious project, revealed during a meeting led by Federal Minister Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, aims to transform Gwadar into a key maritime hub.
Minister Chaudhry stated the initiative is crucial to the government”s strategy for improved regional connectivity and trade. The objective is to establish Gwadar as a major transshipment and logistics center, benefiting Pakistan and the surrounding area.
With Gwadar Port now fully functional, the focus is on integrating it into global maritime systems. The Minister directed departments to boost the port”s commercial endeavors and maximize its potential.
Connecting additional shipping routes to Gwadar will facilitate increased cargo flow, encourage transit commerce with Central Asia and the Middle East, and support Pakistan’s growing logistics role. These new pathways will alleviate strain on existing ports, ensuring swifter and more effective cargo management.
The planned ferry service to GCC countries will offer an economical, direct sea link for passengers and freight, particularly benefiting overseas communities and cross-border merchants. This service is projected to strengthen international relationships, stimulate tourism, and offer a new economic opportunity for Balochistan.
The ferry service is expected to create jobs, improve infrastructure, and attract private investment in shipping services, accommodation, and transport. The Ministry is consulting with shipping firms, maritime authorities, and port administrators to finalize operational details, prioritizing safety, affordability, and environmental responsibility.
Minister Chaudhry reiterated the government”s dedication to capitalizing on Gwadar”s strategic location. These maritime advancements align with Pakistan”s goal of becoming a regional trade passage and expanding its blue economy, as outlined in the National Maritime Policy.
