Federal Govt to Crack Down on Religious Hate Speech on Social Media During Muharram

In a significant move to ensure peace and security during Muharram, the federal government has decided to take strict action against individuals spreading religious hatred through social media platforms.

A high-level meeting was held here on Thursday chaired by Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, to review the security plan for Muharram across all provinces, including Azad Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Islamabad.

The meeting concluded that any form of hate speech or sectarian incitement on electronic and social media would be dealt with firmly. The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) will be provided with clear recommendations to monitor and curb the dissemination of such content.

The government also resolved to take all necessary administrative measures to maintain law and order during the sacred month. Decisions regarding temporary suspension of internet and mobile phone services will be made in consultation with the respective provincial governments, based on prevailing security threats.

Minister Naqvi emphasized that any such decisions must be based on ground realities and current security assessments. He assured full federal cooperation with provinces, Azad Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Islamabad to maintain peace and order. “No one will be allowed to incite violence or disrupt harmony,” he asserted.

Provincial governments have already begun implementing security protocols. Both Punjab and Sindh have decided to enforce Section 144 from 1st to 10th Muharram. In Sindh, there will be a ban on carrying weapons, unauthorized rallies, processions, use of drones or heli-cams, and illegal use of loudspeakers.

According to a notification from the Sindh Home Department, all weapons licenses will remain suspended during this period. Additionally, a ban on pillion riding will be enforced on the 9th and 10th of Muharram.

Punjab’s Home Department spokesperson stated that no new processions or gatherings will be allowed without official permission. Public display of weapons and flammable materials will be strictly prohibited. Section 144 will also be applied to ban slogans, gestures, or statements that incite sectarian or ethnic hatred.

The comprehensive plan reflects the government’s commitment to curbing sectarian tensions and ensuring peaceful observance of Muharram across the country.
