Eight-family members died due to viral diseases in Thatta

Karachi: The miseries of the flood survivors continue as eight people of a family have died due to cerebral malaria and gastroenteritis near Jhirk village of Thatta district in a few days.

Reportedly, at least seven people also died in nearby villages due to water-borne diseases. The flood affectees held local administration and the health department responsible for the causalities.

They said the poor performance of the officials is creating problems for the affectees to survive after the recent rains and flood disasters.

They said a number of children and elders have been fighting against various epidemic diseases helplessly in the makeshift huts due to the unhygienic environment and food.

Eight members of a person namely Juman of village Juman Bukiru near the Jhirk area, died due to brain malaria and gastro within a few days creating a panicky situation among the survivors, they added.

Among the deceased, Juman’s wife, daughter, daughter-in-law, two nephews namely Nawaz and Zahid, two grand-nephews, and one nephew’s daughter died one after the other, they added.

Most of the patients who died were shifted to Jhirk Hospital for treatment, but the hospital administration allegedly did not treat them well, the alleged, and adding that two patients died in Jamshoro Hospital.

Three women and four men, including Urs Jharko, and Jan Muhammad Jharko, residents of Arbab Maluk Jharko, another village of Jhirk, died due to viral diseases. Stagnant water is still accumulating in many surrounding villages, which is working as an agent in spreading malaria and other viral diseases throughout the area and several cases are being reported everywhere, they added.

More than 20 children and elderly people are lying in their homes battling for life due to a lack of medical treatment facilities in the flood-hit areas, they added.

The Health Department and other concerned officials have been repeatedly informed about the diseases but to no avail. Nobody visited the area to spray against malaria and for the provision of medical facilities to the villagers, they added.
