Ban on polythene bags in Karachi on the cards

KARACHI: Commissioner Karachi, Sindh Solid Waste Management Board, Police and Karachi Metropolitan Municipality would take joint action to ensure ban on manufacture, sale and use of polythene bags in Karachi. The decision has been taken to prevent damage to the city’s infrastructure due to manufacture, sale and use of plastic shoppers/ polythene bags in Karachi.

Sindh Chief Secretary Dr. Muhammad Sohail Rajput said that factories manufacturing banned plastic bags in the province should be sealed. He said this while presiding over a high-level meeting on Wednesday at Sindh Secretariat. Administrator Karachi Murtaza Wahab, Secretary Home Saeed Ahmed Mangrijo, Commissioner Karachi Mohammad Iqbal Memon, Additional IG Karachi Javed Alam Odhu and all Deputy Commissioners participated in the meeting.

In the meeting, Administrator Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab said that plastic bags are the cause of environmental pollution. “Sindh Assembly had passed a bill to ban plastic bags in 2014 and KMC has also put a complete ban on plastic bags through a resolution” He said. He further stated that KMC officers are raiding various markets to ensure ban on plastic bags, he added that plastic bags are one of the reasons for the blockage of storm drains in Karachi.

In the meeting, Chief Secretary Sindh Dr. Muhammad Sohail Rajput said that now the district administration, police, KMC will take action against those who manufacturer and sell banned plastic bags. Chief Secretary Sindh directed all the Deputy Commissioners to seal the factories making banned plastic bags. He instructed the Commissioner Karachi that 144 should be imposed regarding the use of prohibited plastic bags.
