KARACHI: Sindh Minister for Energy Imtiaz Ahmed Shaikh inaugurated the Civil Hospital Solarization Project that will enable the hospital to meet one third of the its electricity needs.

The project, funded by the World Bank, costs USD 900,000. The solarization of the Civil Hospital will prevent the production of 1851 tons of carbon dioxide per year. Director Infrastructure of the World Bank, and other officials were also accompanied the minister, according to a statement issued Thursday.

Speaking on the occasion, the Sindh Energy Minister said that the Sindh government was committed to international agreements to reduce environmental pollution and the Sindh government was making rapid progress in alternative, transparent and renewable energy projects.

He said that under Sindh Solar Energy Project, 37 hospitals of Sindh are being rapidly solarized including Civil Hospital Karachi and seven other government hospitals in Karachi. He said that under the Sindh Solar Energy Project, with the collaboration of World Bank, a project was underway to bring solar power to homes in remote areas of the province, which would provide clean electricity to the rural poor people and they will get relief.

Shaikh lauded the cooperation of World Bank officials in completing the project and the performance of the officers and staff of the Sindh Energy Department’s Solar Energy Project. It was informed on the occasion that the electricity generated at a cost of USD 900,000 in collaboration with the World Bank on the Solarization Project of the Civil Hospital would be able to meet one third of the electricity needs of the Civil Hospital Karachi.
