Sindh opposes approval of Greater Thal Canal-II

KARACHI: Sindh Minister for Irrigation Department Jam Khan Shoro on Thursday opposed the decision of ruling federal government regarding the approval of Greater Thal Canal-II in the meeting of Planning Commission of Pakistan.

The project of greater Thal Canal-II would turn millions of acres of agricultural land of Sindh province into barren land and province would also face acute shortage of water in future, he said in a statement.

The minister said that officers of the Sindh Irrigation Department strongly opposed the approval of the greater Thal Canal-II in today’s meeting of the Planning Commission of Pakistan and raised their objections on the project. Shoro said that Thal Canal-II project would caused severe water shortage in Sindh province, particularly during Kharif season, and it was tantamount to destroying the province.

Shoro said Sindh province had already informed the federal government about reservations and objections regarding the Jalalpur Canal project but work had also been started on it despite of Sindh province’s grave concerns.
