Russia says its troops have broken through two fortified lines of Ukrainian defences on the eastern front.

The Russian Defence Ministry said the Ukrainians have retreated in the face of attacks in the Luhansk region.

However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s office said their forces have repelled Russian attacks in Luhansk but the situation in the region remains difficult.

Russia’s main effort has been focused on the town of Bakhmut in Donetsk province adjacent to Luhansk.
