Transgender school shut down in Lahore over funds paucity

LAHORE: Paucity of funds has led to the closure of only transgender school in Lahore that was opened in Barkat Market at the end of 2022, shattering the intersex community’s dream of receiving an education on Tuesday. The closure of the school has once again highlighted the government’s incompetence and raised concerns about its performance after making grandiose promises to the transgender community to guarantee equal rights.

It merits here to mention that Government Girls High School was established in Barkat Market to educate and teach skills to transpersons. It was inaugurated by former provincial education minister Murad Raas. In addition to providing them with schooling, the administration was required to provide the transpersons with pick-up and drop-off services as well as a monthly stipend.

The school administration, however, has failed to run the school and there haven’t been any class in the school for the last one month. According to the education authority, the transgender students were given a short course of three months and that new classes will start as soon as the funds are received.
