Suspension of Indus Water Treaty is a Direct Threat to Pakistan’s Water Supply: Prime Minister

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized the importance of defending Pakistan’s water rights under the Indus Water Treaty, especially in view of unilateral actions by India that could jeopardize regional water security.

On the occasion of the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, the Prime Minister expressed serious concern over India’s recent suspension of the Indus Water Treaty. He described this action as a direct threat to Pakistan’s water supply and environmental stability. He stressed the need for collective efforts to protect these vital resources, which play a crucial role in supporting agriculture, conserving biodiversity, and sustaining rural communities.

Sharif also spoke about the government’s environmental protection initiatives, including the expansion of the Green Pakistan Program. This initiative has led to the planting of over 2.2 billion trees aimed at restoring the country’s deteriorating landscapes and ecological systems.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister reiterated his firm commitment to advancing sustainable land management practices and enhancing the country’s water storage capacity. These measures are considered essential for preparing and mitigating the effects of future water shortages.

During a time of increasing tension over water rights, Sharif’s strong stance on adhering to the treaty’s obligations and promoting an environmentally sustainable future remains crucial.
