Spillways of Tarbela Dam Opened to Manage Rising Water Levels

Islamabad: The spillways of Tarbela Dam have been opened: This action is intended to manage the increasing water flows in the downstream areas of the Indus River.

According to Radio Pakistan, the opening of the spillways is anticipated to significantly increase water flow in low-lying areas along the Indus River, including Layyah, Bhakkar, and Mianwali. The surge in river discharge is attributed to rapidly melting glaciers due to increasing temperatures and recent rainfall in the upper regions.

The public has been advised to avoid recreational and tourism activities along the Indus River. Authorities have urged individuals to stay away from waterways during periods of strong water flow to ensure safety. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) is actively monitoring the situation, assessing potential risks, and ensuring the timely dissemination of necessary information to relevant authorities and the public.
