Sindh launches drive to administer polio drops to 1.8m children

KARACHI:Sindh Minister for Health and Population Welfare Dr Azra Pechuho and WHO Representative Pakistan Dr Palitha Mahipala jointly inaugurated the Polio Case Response Campaign in Sindh on Monday. The campaign, scheduled from June 19 to 25, 2023, aims to administer polio drops to 1.8 million children under 5 years in specific districts of Karachi, Jamshoro, and Hyderabad. With an unyielding commitment to eliminating polio, more than 10,000 polio frontline workers have been mobilized, exemplifying their dedication to protecting the health and well-being of children in Sindh. This collective effort is a testament to the unified determination to achieve a polio-free future.

At the inauguration event at Sindh EOC, attended by high-ranking officials and esteemed partners, including the Secretary of Health Sindh, EOC Coordinator and Core Team Sindh, WHO Head of sub-office, WHO Polio Team Lead Sindh, and representatives from partner organizations, the Polio Case Response Campaign was officially launched. This campaign holds immense significance in the ongoing efforts to eradicate polio from Sindh. In a separate endeavor, Dr. Mahipala, WHO Representative and Head of Mission Pakistan, Dr. Zainul Abedin, National Polio Coordinator WHO, Mr. Tabraiz Alam, Deputy Commissioner of East, and Dr. Shakeel, District Health Officer of East, inaugurated the polio case response campaign at Jannat Gul Hospital in Gujro, East.

The distinguished guests actively participated in administering polio drops to children under the age of 5 years. This localized effort focused on reaching more than 100,000 children in the UC Gujro area, identified as a super high-risk region in the district of East. Furthermore, as a tribute to the unwavering dedication and tireless efforts of the polio frontline workers, Dr. Mahipala visited Al Asif Square Bus Stand, one of the busiest transit points in Karachi. There, he expressed his heartfelt appreciation for their commitment and contributions in the fight against polio. Dr. Mahipala emphasized their pivotal role, stating, “Frontline polio workers across Pakistan are heroes in the battle against polio.

The collaboration and unity exhibited at today’s inauguration ceremony underscore the shared vision of a polio-free Sindh. The Minister of Health and Population Welfare Sindh, the WHO Representative, and all stakeholders involved are committed to achieving this vital objective and ensuring a healthier future for the children of Sindh.
