A two-day high-level strategic planning workshop began on Wednesday to formulate a comprehensive strategy for the elimination of violent extremism in Sindh, with a special focus on countering the spread of extremist narratives through social media and other modern means.
According to Sindh’s Home Secretary Iqbal Memon, this initiative, launched by the Sindh government under the auspices of the Sindh Center for Excellence on Countering Violent Extremism, aims to create a concrete and sustainable policy to address the security challenge.
The discussions are being led by Home Secretary Iqbal Memon, accompanied by senior officials from the Sindh Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), including Additional IG CTD Zulfiqar Larik and SSP CTD Operations Irfan Bahadur. The SSP of the Anti-Violent Crime Cell is also participating in these crucial consultations.
A collaborative approach has been adopted at the event with the inclusion of officers from the National Counter Terrorism Authority (NACTA) and representatives from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), highlighting the national and international scope of this effort.
The forum has brought together various stakeholders, including senior officials, law enforcement personnel, distinguished academics, civil society delegates, and international partners.
Participants are presenting various proposals designed to improve the law and order situation and to curb extremist ideologies. The primary objective is to unite all participants on one platform to establish a joint strategy for creating a strong front against extremism.
Beyond immediate security concerns, the workshop is also tasked with identifying future measures to promote greater tolerance and social harmony in the province.
The two-day consultation is expected to conclude with the issuance of a detailed policy document, which will assist the Sindh government in formulating a sustainable and effective framework against extremism.
