Shortage of staff: Postmortem of slain woman conducted by male doctor

NAUNDERO: After 10 hours, a postmortem of a killed woman was performed by a male doctor with the help of two Lady Health Visitors (LHVs) at Government Hospital here on Tuesday due to acute shortage of lady doctors. A 70-year old Shahnawaz Khatoon wife of Saindad Jeho was gunned down after a dispute between two groups of Jeho community over ownership of a fish farm in village Faiz Muhammad Jeho last midnight. The village is located within the limits of Naundero police station.

Her body was shifted by police to the Government Hospital, Naundero, for postmortem but it was kept there from 3am midnight till 10 am in the morning today due to unavailability of a woman medical officer.

Duty doctor refrred the case to Taluka Headquarter Hospital, Ratodero, for fulfillment of legal formalities so that her relatives could carry out her final rites but duty doctors at Ratodero refused to conduct postmorten saying that the murder has taken place within the limits of Naundero police station hence autopsy will also be carried out at Naundero Hospital. Her body was again brought to Naundero Hospital where male Dr. Gazanfar Khokhar conducted the postmortem with the help of two LHVs after which it was handed over to the heirs for burial.

Two sons of the deceased woman namely Qurban and Mahmood Jeho alleged while talking to newsmen that Ali Hassan Jeho was released on bail who was behind the bars in the murder case of Ali Gul Jeho. They said that the accused Ali Hassan last midnight attacked our house along with Maula Bux Jeho, Zahid, Abdullah, Hussain Bux, Paryal, Kashif and others and started indiscriminate firing in which our mother was killed. They demanded justice and thorough probe into the brutal murder. They said after ten hours an autopsy was conducted which is a barbaric act and needs to be thoroughly investigated.

On the other hand, Dr. Ghazanfar Khokhar said that lady doctor Naila Naz was granted three months leave without provision of her substitute either by the Health Department or the Integrated Health Services (IHS) which is managing the affairs of this hospital since long due to which medico-legal cases of women are very badly affected. He said we referred the woman’s murder case for postmortem to Ratodero Hospital which too is managed by IHS but they refused hence with the help of two LHVs he conducted the autopsy on humanitarian ground.

It must be mentioned that eight lady doctors were transferred by the Sindh’s Health Department from Shaikh Zayed Hospital for Women, Larkana, on 11th April, 2021, to Government Hospital here but none of them reported for duty which proves that the rulers have lost their writ and health department is no excuse but the poor people of about 200 adjoining villages continue to suffer for no fault of theirs. These eight lady doctors are alleged to be ghosts but they continue to draw their monthly salaries owing to their influence.
