President of Pakistan Kissan Ittehad, Khalid Khokhar, met with Senator Syed Masroor Ahsan, Chairman Senate Standing Committee on National Food Security and Research, here on Thursday and discussed about the problems currently facing by the farmers of Pakistan.

The meeting was convened to focus on the existing challenges faced by the farmer’s community, particularly low price of wheat crop. Senator Ahsan acknowledged the seriousness of these issues and stressed the importance of immediate attention.

He proposed subsidy in field of Seeds, electricity, fuel, fertilizers and pesticides to reduce the cost of production of crops. The Chairman also proposed to establish a department like Pakistan Agriculture Commission to oversee and formulate agricultural policies and initiatives effectively.

He emphasized that the Chairman of the said Commission should be selected on merit basis, ensuring transparency and competence in leadership for a better outcomes.

Khalid Khokhar while representing the farmer’s community highlighted the declining trend in agricultural exports like oranges, chilies, and rice over the past four months. This trend adversely affected the incomes of all farmers throughout the country.

Khalid suggested to convene a meeting before the upcoming budget to seek suggestions for the betterment of agricultural sector. He assured that the Pakistan Kissan Ittehad would participate to present comprehensive recommendations aimed at supporting and uplifting the farming community.

Furthermore, the discussion underscored the necessity of announcing a minimum support price for wheat growers to handle low market prices of wheat and ensure their economic stability.

Senator Ahsan reaffirmed the Committee’s commitment to uplifting the agricultural sector, recognizing it as the backbone of Pakistan’s economy.

He also told that Pakistan being an agricultural country, it must be the top priority of policy makers to support and protect the farmer community for the economic stability of the country.
