In a significant move to enhance women’s economic inclusion, the Senate today unanimously passed a resolution urging the government to accelerate measures for gender equality.

The resolution was introduced by Senator Sherry Rehman on International Women’s Day. It emphasized the need for infrastructure that supports women’s needs, including safer transport, workplace child facilities, and better access to digital and financial resources. The resolution also called for comprehensive educational opportunities and training for women, advocating for the removal of barriers to schooling and the promotion of literacy programs.

In addition, the resolution highlighted the importance of involving women in sustainable agriculture and food security by providing technical training and ensuring land rights. It stressed the necessity for women to have the autonomy to make informed health choices and urged reforms in healthcare policies to improve access to reproductive health services.

Further, the resolution demanded robust action against gender-based violence and workplace harassment, and called for increased investment in female athletes to boost women’s participation in sports. The document concluded by inviting all stakeholders, including the government, civil society, and the private sector, to collaborate in the pursuit of gender equality.

During the session, newly elected Senator Asad Qasim took his oath of office, administered by Chairman Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani. The Senate session was adjourned and is scheduled to reconvene on Tuesday at 11:30 am.
