The Senate of Pakistan is forming a dedicated task force to address the growing threat of climate-induced displacement, a key outcome of a high-level meeting with United Nations officials and the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The meeting, held at the Senate Secretariat on Friday, saw Advisor to the Chairman Senate on Special Initiatives, Ms. Rida Qazi, and IOM Chief of Mission, Ms. Mio Sato, lead discussions on strengthening migration governance.

The UN representatives highlighted the escalating challenges of climate migration, particularly in the context of floods and other climate-related disasters. They stressed the urgent need to incorporate mobility issues linked to climate change into policy frameworks.

Ms. Qazi affirmed the Senate’s dedication to a people-centered approach to migration management, emphasizing the role of parliamentary Standing Committees in integrating migration policies and boosting accountability. She announced the proposed parliamentary task force as a crucial mechanism to drive this agenda forward.

The discussions also focused on the significant contribution of Pakistani expatriates, whose financial transfers are vital to the national economy. The Senate reaffirmed its dedication to promoting secure and legitimate migration through strategic diplomatic efforts and global engagement.

The UN delegation acknowledged existing funding shortfalls but pointed to potential avenues within climate finance and collaborations with emerging benefactors. They highlighted the potential of parliamentary diplomacy in facilitating discussions and securing support.

Both parties agreed to pursue collaborative efforts within a joint framework, emphasizing ongoing communication, innovative collaborations, and coordinated action to confront migration obstacles. The UN officials viewed migration as a diplomatic imperative encompassing issues beyond labor and economic progress.
