In Ukraine, Russian forces have stepped up their drive to encircle the eastern city of Bakhmut, the last remaining urban centres in the Donetsk region.

Russian forces are trying to cut the Ukrainian defenders’ supply lines to the city to force them to surrender or withdraw.

The commander of Ukraine’s ground forces Colonel General Oleksandr Syrskyi has described the situation as extremely tense.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, in his radio address, said Russian forces “are constantly destroying everything that can be used to protect our positions for fortification and defence”.
