LAHORE: Punjab Governor Omar Sarfraz Cheema said Sunday in a five-page report to President Arif Alvi that the election of the Chief Minister (CM) of Punjab was not in accordance with the Constitution and the law.
He said in the report that the voting record of the CM’s election was also tampered with, demanding that the president declare the election of the Punjab CM null and void. He maintained that the resignation of former chief minister Usman Buzdar was also controversial as the governor’s office did not receive his resignation.
“How can the governor accept a resignation when it has not been received?” he pointed out. Omar Sarfraz Cheema said that police had entered the House in violation of the assembly rules, adding that the Sub-Clause (8) of Article 130 of the Constitution was violated.
“The Governor Office never received the resignation of former chief minister Usman Buzdar. The election of the chief minister should therefore be declared null and void,” he demanded. “I should be guided constitutionally in the light of the facts stated. I should be suggested what steps I should take in this situation,” he sought guidance.
“The report sent to me by the Punjab Assembly secretary also stated that there was a violation of the rules. Deputy Speaker Dost Muhammad Mazari did not conduct the election as directed by the Honourable Bench of the Lahore High Court,” he maintained. “The deputy speaker did not follow the procedure of peaceful elections under the Constitution of Pakistan,” he stated.
