The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday disqualified Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Member of National Assembly (MNA) Jamshed Dasti for submitting fabricated academic credentials. The ruling follows a reference filed by National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq.
Dasti’s expulsion stems from discrepancies in his educational qualifications. The ECP upheld the accusations that the legislator falsely declared completion of his FA (Intermediate) in his nomination papers. The inquiry revealed he had not passed Matriculation nor finished FA.
The complaint also included allegations of asset concealment and submission of inaccurate data in his nomination documents. A three-member ECP bench, having finalized proceedings in May 2025, issued the reserved judgment.
Citizen Amir Akbar initiated the petition, with his legal representative arguing that Dasti’s nomination papers contained false declarations regarding his education and financial holdings. Dasti’s political journey commenced with the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). He secured his first National Assembly seat in the 2013 general elections from NA-178, Muzaffargarh.
He subsequently resigned from both the PPP and the National Assembly, contesting and winning the next election as an independent, defeating Hina Rabbani Khar’s father. In the 2024 general elections, he was elected again, this time under the PTI banner. He was reportedly among the PTI members pressured to abandon the party after the May 9, 2023, incidents. The disqualification will likely necessitate a by-election in his constituency.
