In a major step toward reforming medical education in Pakistan, the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PM and DC) has announced the implementation of a globally recognised Continuing Professional Development (CPD) system, developed in collaboration with the U.S.-based Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME).
A high-level ACCME delegation visited the PM and DC headquarters in Islamabad for intensive, two-and-a-half-day strategic discussions aimed at designing a CPD regulatory framework aligned with international standards. The initiative is expected to revolutionise continuing medical education in the country, enhancing healthcare outcomes and improving global recognition of Pakistan’s medical workforce.
The strategy sessions were attended by experts from leading institutions and facilitated by PM and DC President Prof. Dr. Rizwan Taj, ACCME President and CEO Dr Graham McMahon, ACCME Vice President Dr Dion Richetti, and other international consultants. The sessions focused on global trends, best practices, and the evolving landscape of CPD in healthcare, offering an interactive learning experience to shape Pakistan’s future-ready CPD framework.
‘This system will raise the standard of patient care and medical education in Pakistan,’ said Dr Rizwan Taj. ‘It will enhance the employability and professional recognition of Pakistani healthcare professionals not only in the region but also on the global stage.’
The ACCME, a Chicago-based nonprofit that accredits continuing medical education providers globally, expressed confidence in Pakistan’s commitment to elevate its medical education standards. During their visit, the delegation also met with Federal Minister for National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination, Syed Mustafa Kamal, who assured full government support for the initiative.
The CPD framework is built on evidence-based practices and will ensure that healthcare professionals in Pakistan remain updated, competent, and patient-focused throughout their careers. According to PM and DC, the new system will foster a culture of continuous learning, accountability, and excellence in healthcare delivery nationwide.
‘The implementation of this CPD system marks a transformative milestone for Pakistan,’ added Prof. Dr. Taj. ‘It will lead to improved patient outcomes, enhance public trust, and align Pakistan’s healthcare education with international benchmarks.’
The PM and DC reiterated its dedication to working with local and global partners to ensure successful execution and long-term impact of the CPD initiative, reinforcing its commitment to professional excellence and global integration in healthcare education.
