PM Reaffirms Pakistan’s Commitment to UN Humanitarian Efforts

Islamabad: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has reiterated Pakistan's dedication to collaborating closely with the United Nations and the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) to bolster global humanitarian cooperation, improve disaster preparedness, and support relief operations for communities impacted by conflicts and natural disasters. This commitment was emphasized during his meeting with United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Tom Fletcher, in Islamabad.

According to Radio Pakistan, Prime Minister Sharif expressed appreciation for the humanitarian work conducted by OCHA in addressing complex global emergencies. He acknowledged the organization's ongoing support to Pakistan, particularly during the catastrophic floods of 2022, and extended gratitude for its aid in enhancing the nation's disaster response capabilities.

Prime Minister Sharif highlighted the advancements made by Pakistan's national and provincial disaster management institutions in tackling climate-induced disasters. However, he underscored the necessity for increased preparedness, resilience, and coordination among national, regional, and international stakeholders in light of the rising frequency and severity of climate-related events.

Tom Fletcher, in his remarks, expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister for the reception and praised the enduring partnership and cooperation between Pakistan and OCHA. He lauded Prime Minister Sharif's efforts in promoting regional peace and stability, emphasizing that sustainable peace is crucial for addressing the humanitarian and economic impacts of conflicts.

During the meeting, Fletcher briefed the Prime Minister on the humanitarian situation in Gaza and the challenges faced by OCHA in providing essential aid to the affected population. He also acknowledged Pakistan's ongoing support for OCHA's humanitarian initiatives in Afghanistan.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Adviser to the Prime Minister Dr. Syed Tauqir Shah, Chairman NDMA Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik, and other senior officials.
