Pakistan vows to tackle climate change, control plastic pollution

President Asif Ali Zardari today issued a passionate plea for collective action to combat the urgent challenges posed by climate change.

In a message on World Environment Day, President Zardari emphasized the critical need for individuals and organizations to join forces in safeguarding the environment, preserving biodiversity, and ensuring the prudent use of natural resources.

The President underscored the importance of unity in his message, declaring, “Let”s unite for a cleaner and greener Pakistan.” He highlighted that this annual observance serves as a poignant reminder of the shared duty to protect our planet and promote a sustainable future for the generations that will follow.

In addition to advocating for national collaboration, President Zardari called for global climate justice and robust international cooperation. He stressed the necessity of addressing the existing disparities and securing comprehensive support from the global community to effectively tackle the pressing environmental issues at hand.

Separately, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said today in a message on the eve of World Environment Day that Pakistan has joined the international community in reaffirming its commitment to safeguard our planet and pursue sustainable development.

He said this year’s urgent theme, ‘Putting an End to Plastic Pollution,’ underscores a pressing environmental challenge that threatens ecosystems, economies, and future generations worldwide.

Sharif said plastic waste has reached catastrophic levels, choking rivers and seas, harming marine life, and contaminating food chains across the globe. Pakistan is not immune to these challenges, making it imperative for the nation to take decisive and united action.

“The Government of Pakistan has pledged to implement policies promoting eco-friendly alternatives, responsible consumption, and stricter regulations on plastic usage. However, significant transformation begins at the individual level, in homes and communities, through conscious choices and actions.”

Let this day serve as a reminder of our shared responsibility to ourselves and to the generations yet to come. The call to action is clear: it is time for bold steps in the fight against plastic pollution, said PM.
