Pakistan has called on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to address the Kashmir conflict, citing it as a major source of instability between India and Pakistan.

Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN and current UNSC President, stressed the need for the Council, particularly its permanent members, to enforce its resolutions on the matter. He made these remarks during a press briefing in New York after assuming the UNSC presidency for July.

Ahmad affirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the principles of the UN Charter, emphasizing peaceful conflict resolution, national sovereignty, adherence to international law, and collaborative diplomacy.

Pakistan plans to hold two key events during its presidency. The first is a high-level open debate on fostering global peace and security. This will focus on multilateralism, peaceful dispute settlement, and cooperation between the UN and regional bodies like the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

The second event is the Security Council’s quarterly open debate on the Middle East, focusing on the Palestinian issue. Given the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza, this debate will be held at the ministerial level.
