At the United Nations (UN), Pakistan has called for enhanced role of International Court of Justice (ICJ) to address global security threats and uphold justice in Palestine and Jammu and Kashmir.
The call was made by the Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations Ambassador Munir Akram while delivering a statement at the UN General Assembly on a discussion titled ‘Report of the International Court of Justice’.
The Ambassador said that given the fact that the threats to global peace and security and violations of the UN Charter and its principles have multiplied, the role of the International Court of Justice has become even more indispensable today than ever before.
Munir Akram said that many peoples, particularly the people of Palestine and occupied Jammu and Kashmir, continue to be subjected to foreign and colonial occupation and denied their right to self-determination.
He said at a time when the Security Council is virtually paralyzed due to the frequent use and threat of the veto power of some permanent members of the Security Council, the International Court of Justice has played a prominent role in upholding the principles of the UN Charter and international law.
In a call to reinforce global justice mechanisms, Ambassador Munir Akram urged the UN General Assembly and Security Council to expand the role of the International Court of Justice in defending international law and maintaining world order.
