Pakistan Seeks Global Partnership to Address Nation’s Health Challanges

Pakistan’s Federal Health Minister, Syed Mustafa Kamal, has issued an urgent plea for international collaboration and investment to address the nation’s escalating public health predicament.

Speaking at the Global Health Forum in Beijing, Minister Kamal painted a stark picture of the difficulties faced by Pakistan’s burgeoning population. With over 250 million residents and an annual population surge of more than 6 million, Pakistan’s healthcare infrastructure is severely strained. Kamal stressed that 68% of health problems stem from waterborne illnesses, a direct consequence of untreated sewage contaminating potable water. He highlighted the nation’s population growth rate of 3.6%, the highest in the region, as a significant contributing factor to the crisis.

The minister called upon international partners, particularly those from China and the Asia-Pacific, to invest in Pakistan’s health sector. He identified key areas for cooperation, including training skilled personnel, acquiring advanced medical equipment, and incorporating traditional medicine practices. He assured potential investors of substantial returns, simplified regulations, and robust governmental backing. Kamal cited a recently implemented digital regulatory system for medical devices that has dramatically reduced approval times.

Kamal emphasized Pakistan’s shift from a reactive ‘sick care’ approach to a proactive ‘health care’ system focused on strengthening primary healthcare. He outlined a vision of a technologically advanced health system leveraging telemedicine and artificial intelligence to reach remote populations.

He affirmed the government’s dedication to healthcare reform, referencing the newly established national commission on population and health reform. “Our objective is to ensure healthcare accessibility for every Pakistani, not as a privilege, but as a fundamental right, while also contributing to global health solutions,” he declared. Kamal concluded by expressing appreciation to the forum organizers and the Beijing Municipal Government.
