Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif today underscored Pakistan’s dedication to bolstering democratic principles.
This commitment was made by the Prime Minister in a message on the International Day of Parliamentarism, observed annually on June 30. He emphasized the critical function of parliaments in fostering inclusive governance, representing women and youth, and integrating technology into legislative procedures.
Sharif highlighted the Pakistani Parliament’s crucial constitutional role. Through its legislative power and the diligent efforts of its standing committees, the legislative body ensures accountability, openness, and executive branch oversight. The Constitution guarantees female representation through reserved seats, and numerous women parliamentarians currently hold leadership positions within committees, demonstrating inclusive leadership.
“The legislative body has actively pursued progressive legislation, especially in promoting gender equality and social welfare. Inclusivity has also been central to the government”s approach, with broad consultations during the FY 2025-26 budget preparation. This inclusive approach forms the foundation of a robust democracy.”
He said that Pakistani parliamentarians actively participate in global parliamentary diplomacy, advocating for peace, development, and international collaboration through platforms like the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
Following recent regional tensions, a multi-party delegation effectively presented Pakistan’s viewpoint on global platforms. The nation has also embraced technology to enhance parliamentary transparency and accessibility. The Prime Minister concluded by urging a renewed commitment to strengthening parliamentary bodies, protecting democratic ideals, and ensuring citizen voices are reflected in lawmaking.
