Pakistan took a significant step towards safer and greener ship dismantling practices with the introduction of the Environmentally Sound Management of Inventory of Hazardous Material on Ships Bill, 2025, in the National Assembly.

Presented by Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar on behalf of the Maritime Affairs Minister, the legislation aims to bring Pakistan in line with the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships, 2009.

The proposed law focuses on minimizing environmental and health risks associated with the industry by promoting responsible handling of hazardous materials during the ship recycling process. It seeks to establish a framework for the sustainable management of waste generated from these operations.

The National Assembly of Pakistan announced the introduction of the measure via a statement on X (formerly Twitter). The bill’s introduction signals Pakistan’s commitment to international standards for ship recycling, addressing concerns about worker safety and environmental protection. The legislation”s progress through the legislative process will be closely watched.
