In a bid to confront climate-induced disasters and accelerate a nationwide shift to clean mobility, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif today formally launched the New Energy Vehicle Policy 2025-2030, a plan designed to curb carbon emissions, conserve foreign exchange, foster innovation and empower youth.
Officials described the initiative as a bold step toward a green transport era while acknowledging Pakistan”s mounting climate risks. The prime minister underscored that the country remains highly vulnerable to climate change despite contributing little to the phenomenon, citing intensifying floods, cloudbursts and Glacial Lake Outburst Floods as evidence.
He urged developed nations, particularly Western powers, to support vulnerable states in building climate-resilient infrastructure and adapting to a warming world. National Food Security and Research Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain said the measure embodies the prime minister”s vision of empowering youth and promoting clean mobility across the nation.
Special Assistant to the PM on Industries and Production Haroon Akhtar Khan described the electric-vehicle initiative as a blueprint for Pakistan”s clean transport revolution, noting a shift from assembly toward battery production, charging equipment and advanced components.
He highlighted that Pakistan spends billions annually on petroleum imports and that urban air pollution costs over 105 billion rupees in productivity and healthcare losses, while about 126 terawatt hours of electricity remain underutilized.
The official added that operating an electric motorcycle costs less than one-third of the petrol per kilometer, and that affordability, financing reforms, toll exemptions and free registration would widen access to electric mobility for households, delivery riders, transporters and businesses.
During the ceremony, the prime minister also distributed free e-bikes among top-performing students.
