Pakistan and the International Atomic Energy Agency will enhance cooperation in peaceful use of nuclear technology, specifically in mitigating the impacts of climate change.
This was agreed during the two-day visit of Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency Rafael Mariano Grossi to Pakistan.
Director General Grossi delivered a key note address at a seminar on the topic “Climate Change Mitigation and the Role of Nuclear Energy” in Islamabad.
In his address, he highlighted the importance of nuclear energy as a clean source in countering the adverse impacts of climate change.
The Director General IAEA appreciated Pakistan’s high standards of nuclear safety and security after visiting a number of nuclear installations including Pakistan Centre of Excellence on Nuclear Security and National Institute of Safety and Security.
During his stay in Pakistan, Chief of nuclear watchdog also called on the Prime Minister, the Foreign Minister, the Minister for Planning, and the Foreign Secretary.
Director General Grossi also held meetings with the Chairman of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission and the Chairman of the Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority who briefed him on the nuclear security and regulatory regime.
At PNRA, he also inaugurated the National Radiation Emergency Coordination Centre.
